Why is one death considered a tragedy, when a million are considered a statistic?

When the one death is someone I know personally, then it's a tragedy to me. But when the million deaths are people from a distant place whom I've never seen nor met, then I would not feel the same level of loss and distress. It is purely a matter of perspective.
